‘Canals were the first internet’ – a canal-side podcast

Our friends at The Roundhouse have just launched a podcast episode full of towpath joys: listen to Lucy Evans’ Playing by Ear – it’s an hour of London’s canals and waterways in stories and soundscapes. Floating book shop Word on the Water features, as does the Puppet Theatre Barge – and the braying in the background is the donkeys who live in canal-side city farms.

As well as poetry from Canal Laureate Nancy Campbell (at around 7 mins 54 secs), you hear from poet Richard Knight (38:46), making the claim that – with its power to connect people, ideas and products – the canal network was the first internet.
